hyperbolic discounting

Unusual for a psychiatrist, Ainslie undertook experimental animal research in  operant conditioning , under the guidance of  Howard Rachlin . He investigated inter-temporal choice in  pigeons , and was the first to demonstrate experimentally the phenomenon of preference reversal in favor of the more immediate outcomes as the choice point between two options, one delivered sooner than the other, is moved forward in time. He explained this in terms of  hyperbolic discounting  of future rewards, derived from ideas that Rachlin and others had developed from  Richard Herrnstein 's  matching law .  A inslie then integrated these ideas with earlier experimental and theoretical work on inter-temporal choice, for example the studies of Walter Mischel  on delay of gratification in children. In his book  Picoeconomics  (1992) he attempted to account for these ideas, and also facts about  addiction  that he was concerned with ...

"Einmal hat Arjen Robben bei uns mittrainiert – eine echte Ehre! Ich war beeindruckt von seiner Besessenheit. Bei Arjen kennt sie keine Grenzen. Er hat den Jungs klar gezeigt: Schaut her, das ist absolute Weltklasse. Da wollt ihr hin. Also gebt alles! Als Holger Badstuber nach seiner langen Verletzung bei uns seine ersten Schritte gemacht hat, war das genauso: Alles 100 Prozent. Da machen wir Torschüsse, und wer läuft nach seinem Schuss in Höchstgeschwindigkeit zurück, während andere locker traben? Holger Badstuber!" Vogel Trainer FCB U 23

Wenn es doch so leicht wäre und wir alle homo oeconomicusse wären -  econs. In Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness, Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein make the distinction between “Econs,” those perfectly rational, perfectly self-interested mythical economic beings, and “Humans,” those, well…humans. Humans have capacity for altruism and are swayed by pesky things like choice framing, the potential for immediate gratification, and so on.  http://www.economistsdoitwithmodels.com/2010/12/18/just-for-fun-econs-versus-humans-in-cartoon-form/

In experiments beginning in the late 1960s, the psychologist Walter Mischel tormented preschoolers with the agonizing choice of one marshmallow now or two marshmallows 15 minutes from now. When he followed up decades later, he found that the 4-year-olds who waited for two marshmallows turned into adults who were better adjusted, were less likely to abuse drugs, had higher self-esteem, had better relationships, were better at handling stress, obtained higher degrees and earned more money. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/books/review/willpower-by-roy-f-baumeister-and-john-tierney-book-review.html?_r=0
