Angela Duckworth: "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance" | Talks ...

Psychologists are now focusing on grit as the key ingredient for happiness and success.
Grit is defined as passion and perseverance in pursuit of long-term goals. Grit determines who survives at West Point, who finals at the National Spelling Bee, and who is tough enough not to be a quitter. “More than anything, it predicts who gets to the finish line of hard goals in life,” Miller says, adding that being talented is of little value unless you pair it with hard work and passion.

1.
And often it's a weakness, not a strength.
2.
Or as some coaches would say-- like Pete Carroll
at the Seahawks-- practicing with great effort.
3.
Ideally, right away and ideally information rich.
4.
...and you try the whole thing over again.

Woody Allen famously once said,
"Eighty percent of succes in life is just showing up."

Dr. Angela Lee Duckworth is professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. Angela studies non-IQ competencies, including self-control and grit, which predict success both academically and professionally. Her research populations have included West Point cadets, National Spelling Bee finalists, novice teachers, salespeople, and students. Angela received a B.A. in Neurobiology from Harvard in 1992 and, as a Marshall Scholar, a Masters in Neuroscience from Oxford.

Maybe the first step is to think of grit not as something to cultivate in students. Instead, maybe grit is the debris – the dream – that lingers. If children and young adults get that piece of grit stuck to them, they’ll be motivated to keep going until the grit is gone.
Perhaps the job of adults, then, isn’t to tell kids to buckle down and work through adversity. It’s about opening their eyes to the innumerable possibilities before them – so they’ll want to persevere in the first place.
Do what you love and you love what you do.
Γνῶθι σαυτόν gnṓthi sautón „Erkenne dich selbst!“
Find your passion.
